What I Think About Long Term Investing

March 20, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

Someone asked me for my opinion on financial matters and I thought I would try to summarize it here for those that care.

In the short term, I don’t have a good idea of what will happen. I am skeptical of those who say they know.

However, in the medium and long term I expect continued and accelerated inflation leading to rising prices and further damage to our economy.

For long term investments I think it’s important to focus on diverse inflation protected assets like income producing real estate, gold, silver, foreign stocks, and possibly U.S. stocks. Building a resilient, profitable small business is also a good option, though it carries it’s own risks.

Despite the continuous devaluation of the dollar, there is nothing wrong with (in fact it is important) to have a decent amount of money set aside. This allows you to ride out the storms of life or jump on opportunities when things become available to purchase at a lower price, i.e. during a recession.

These are just my opinions, not recommendations. I can and have been wrong many times in my life.

If you want to learn more in a way that is easy to understand I would recommend the book Whatever Happened to Penny Candy. It’s one of my favorites and if you have children they would likely enjoy it as well.

Book Review: How to Break Up With Your Phone

May 23, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

This book was informative, enjoyable and life changing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a smart phone, which is just about all of us. The first section of the book focused on how our phones are damaging our health. This was very informative and eye opening and gave me the motivation and desire to change how I used my phone so that I could improve my life.

The second section of the book is focused on how you can change your phone use. It is very practical and useful. After installing a tracking app on my phone and reviewing the data several days later, I realized I was using my phone much more than I thought. The section that most impacted to me was turning off all my notifications. I had been partially doing this one app at a time, but going into my phone and turning them all off at once was extremely helpful! I also removed all my social media apps and it is working out well so far.

If you have a smart phone I would highly recommend reading this book. It will help you become more focused, less anxious, have more time to do the things you love and get more satisfaction out of life. This is a book I will revisit from time to time.
